Land grading is what shapes the ground once the digging is done. We backfill around a new foundation after the foundation dig, then rough grade the lot. When the house is up we come back and set the finish grade. We are based in Monroe and do yard grading across Fairfield County.
People call a grading contractor for one of two reasons. A new build needs backfill, a finish grade, topsoil and seed. An older yard has settled, holds water in a low corner, or slopes back toward the house. Call (412) 944-9931 and we will look at it and write up an estimate.

A new foundation leaves a trench of open ground around the walls. We put that soil back in lifts so it settles less later. Then the lot comes up to a rough grade. Rough grade follows the plan, with the slope set away from the house.
The same work finishes a teardown. After a house teardown the cellar hole is filled to grade and the lot is left flat. Connecticut law puts that step on the demolition job, so the hole does not stay open.
A cleared lot needs the same shaping. After land clearing the ground is left rough, with stump holes and machine ruts. We fill the holes and shape the ground for topsoil or for the builder. Any fill trucked in has to be clean fill, which Connecticut defines as natural soil, rock, brick or broken concrete.
A wet yard is usually a grade problem. Backfill settles over the first few years and leaves a dish against the foundation. A patio, a walk or a new bed can block the path the water used to take.
The residential code Connecticut builds on sets the target. The ground should fall at least 6 inches in the first 10 feet out from the foundation. Where a lot has no room for that fall, the code calls for a swale or a drain instead.
Regrading cuts the high side down and fills the low side, and we shape it with the excavator. We check the fall as we work, out from the wall and across the yard. Some yards have more water than grade can move, from a high water table or a spring. That one needs a drainage contractor or an engineer, and we will say so.
Construction leaves a yard rough. Tires cut ruts and soil piles leave humps and low spots. On a new house the finish grade and the seed are the last step of site work.
A lot that has been built on is usually short on topsoil. Topsoil is trucked in where the site needs it and spread over the finish grade. Then it is raked out and grass seed goes down.
Timing matters on seed. The Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station puts the best window to start grass seed between August 15 and September 15. Seed goes down outside that window too, and we will tell you what to expect from it.
