Stump removal is what happens after the trees are down and the stumps are still in the ground. We dig them out with an excavator, root ball and all, instead of grinding them down. The stumps are hauled off the property. The hole that is left gets filled back in and graded flat.

We dig them out. A stump grinder chews the wood down below the surface. The roots stay in the ground and a bed of chips is left on top. Our excavator gets under the root ball and lifts the whole stump out instead.
Pulling is the right call when the ground itself has a job to do. A lot cleared for a house, a driveway cut through the woods or a new lawn all need clean ground. Roots left behind break down slowly, and the ground over them can settle. When a lot has a dozen stumps or more, pulling is the faster way through.
Grinding wins on a different job. One stump in a finished lawn, tight to a walk or a fence, suits a stump grinding company. A grinder works in a small space, while an excavator needs room to reach in and swing. We will tell you when that is the better fit.
Most of the stumps we pull come off a lot being cleared for a build. The ground across Fairfield County is glacial till. Roots grow around boulders and fieldstone, and ledge sits close to the surface in spots. A big oak or maple stump comes up with rock and soil tangled into the roots.
Before anything is dug, the call goes in to Call Before You Dig. It is free, and in Connecticut it is the law. The call goes in at least two full days ahead, not counting weekends and holidays. The utilities then mark their lines across the yard.
The utilities only mark their own lines. A buried line running out to a garage or a barn is yours, and so is an invisible pet fence. Point those out, along with irrigation pipe, a propane line or a septic field. We dig by hand around anything close.
The stumps leave the property. Connecticut does not count a tree stump as clean fill. That means a stump cannot be buried on the lot or dropped back into its own hole. Land clearing debris, stumps and tree tops included, goes to a facility permitted to take it.
A root ball takes a lot of soil with it when it lifts out. We work the loose soil back into the hole and bring in fill where it comes up short. The ground is then graded level with the yard around it. If the spot is going to be lawn, topsoil and finish grading follow.
Digging near a wetland, a brook or a pond is a regulated activity in Connecticut. The town inland wetlands agency is the office that decides what it takes. Wetlands here are set by soil type, so a dry looking patch of woods can still be one. We tell you what your town will ask for and line the work up around it.
